Uses of a Lottery Machine3 Pairing Draws

Why Guinevere II is perfect for the FA Cup Draw

The best example of this in the UK is the FA Cup draw, as it is a ‘pairing draw’. The teams are assigned numbers, and then numbered balls are placed into a covered bowl. Two numbers are drawn at a time (usually by two former footballers, such as past winners); the first team drawn plays at home, and the second is the one they face.

Guinevere II is perfect for this type of draw, and with a capacity of up to 80 balls, you can use it to create 40 pairs (though for draws, 64 balls is better, as it makes 32 pairs, then 16, 8, 4, and ultimately two finalists without any byes).

The FA Cup draw is unique because different leagues enter the competition at various stages, with Championship and Premier League teams entering in the third round.

Last year’s winners, Crystal Palace, had to win six games to raise the trophy. To reach the first round proper, the lowest ranking team would have to win six games before the first round proper and 14 games to win the Cup.

The first round proper consists of 80 teams (with a capacity of 80 balls, Guinevere II would be perfect for this, and of course, all the subsequent ones as well). Over the first two rounds, these 80 get whittled down to 20 who join the 44 teams from the Premier and Championship leagues in round 3.
